Professional Paid Internship in Italy
UN system headquarters · Top European research institutions · Italian public cultural institutions
Program Overview
The Professional Paid Internship in Italy is built on Italy's officially recognized Tirocinio Formativo e di Orientamento (training internship) track. All positions are published directly by UN system headquarters in Rome (FAO/WFP), the UNESCO World Heritage Centre in Venice, the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, the Uffizi Galleries, and other international organizations and public cultural institutions, covering Rome, Florence, Venice and Milan. Designed for Chinese applicants without any prior study background in Italy, the program offers a long-term training residence permit, is exempt from Italy's annual non-EU work-quota lottery, and runs 3-12 months with a focus on cultural exchange, international communication, program coordination and IT support. Over 300 non-study-background students have completed the program, and more than 60% transitioned into full-time roles at their host institutions.

FAQ
Can I apply without knowing Italian?
Yes. All partner international organizations work in English. Basic Italian is only needed in a few public-facing cultural activities, and institutions provide free Italian training after onboarding (B1-B2 within 3-6 months). The UN-system track has no Italian requirement at all.
I graduated more than a year ago - am I still eligible?
Yes. The one-year limit applies only to the unpaid UN student track. This program targets professionals with work experience, has no graduation-year limit, and 1+ year of full-time experience significantly strengthens your application.
Must I return to China after the internship?
No. Before the internship residence expires, you can convert it to a 12-month job-seeking permit and seek full-time work in Italy; a formal offer leads to a work permit, and 5 years of residence qualifies for EU long-term residence. You can also return to China and leverage the UN experience for top roles.
Are there any hidden fees during the application?
No. The program is free direct hiring by international organizations. You only cover official fixed costs such as notarization and the visa (about RMB 1,000), with total out-of-pocket under RMB 4,000. Anyone claiming guaranteed admission for tens of thousands of RMB is a scam.
Do I need to interview in Italy?
No. All interviews are conducted online remotely - the entire application can be completed without traveling to Italy.
Can I work part-time during the internship?
Yes. Holders of the long-term training residence may legally work up to 20 hours per week, e.g. at local art exhibitions and cultural events, adding €300-800 per month.
What are the visa approval rates? Do I need a deposit certificate?
The approval rate for Chinese applicants has exceeded 95% over the past three years - the highest among Italy's non-EU visa categories. No large bank deposit certificate is required; the host institution's official support letter replaces it. The visa fee is about RMB 1,000 with no hidden charges.
