Description

Magnetic nanoparticle based imaging of tumor environment in hyperthermia using magnetorelaxometry and deep learning based reconstruction Supervisors: Daniel Baumgarten, University of Innsbruck | Astrid Grams, Medical University of Innsbruck The project This project will investigate novel approaches for Magnetorelaxometry Imaging (MRXI) of magnetic nanoparticle (MNP). MRXI signals do not only contain information on the amount of nanoparticles in a certain volume, but also on their surrounding biological environment, e.g. temperature, binding states, and viscosity. You will work on experimental investigations including the development of measurement procedures and suitable phantoms and on reconstruction approaches based on e.g. deep learning and physics-informed neural networks. With these findings, we aim at advancing magnetic nanoparticle-based treatments, possibly providing clinicians with a novel imaging modality in the future. Your profile We are looking for a motivated student with a strong engineering background as well as experimental and programming coding skills in Python. Ideally, you have • a completed Master’s, Diploma (or equivalent) degree in electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, mechatronics, physics, or a comparable field; • proven knowledge and experience in at least one of the following areas: magnetic field sensing; signal processing; inverse problems; medical imaging; magnetic nanoparticles; hyperthermia; • commitment, the ability to work independently, and good teamwork and communication skills. Formal eligibility (as in the offificial call): • Master’s (or equivalent) degree, final certifificate available before employment starts; no doctoral degree yet. • MSCA mobility rule: not more than 12 months of living, working or studying in Austria in the 36 months before 10 December 2026. What we offer • Full-time doctoral employment contract for 3 years (40 h/week). • Salary from € 3,776.10 gross per month (level B1, Austrian universities’ collective agreement) plus allowances – about a third above most PhD contracts in Austria. • Enrolment in the doctoral programme in Engineering Sciences at the University of Innsbruck, with structured training across both universities (winter schools, transferable-skills courses). • Two secondments at international academic and non-academic partner institutions. • A truly interdisciplinary environment between mathematics and clinical radiology – and life in the Alps. How to apply • Apply online: ignidte.i-med.ac.at/apply – deadline 10 December 2026. • Select DC10 as your preferred doctoral project and include a 2-page research proposal for it. • Online interviews with shortlisted candidates: 18–31 January 2027; decisions by end of February 2027. Questions about the project? Informal enquiries are welcome: Daniel Baumgarten, General questions about the programme and the application: More projects and full call text: ignidte.i-med.ac.at. IGNIDTE is funded by the European Union (Horizon Europe, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions COFUND). Selection follows a transparent, merit-based and equal-opportunity process.
