CALYPSO project aims to accelerate trustworthy AI adoption in Malta by providing AI-optimised high-performance computing, algorithmic support, and secure data environments in priority sectors (finance, transport, and health).
These sectors involve the use of personal data, sometimes sensitive data, originating from existing datasets.
The objectives explicitly include developing and deploying AI systems in compliance with the EU AI Act, GDPR, and national data protection laws.
The project will not target vulnerable populations but will operate in regulated domains where strong ethical and legal safeguards are required.
The project will process personal data and further process previously collected datasets from trusted sources, including European Data Spaces (EFDS, EHDS,
EMDS).
All personal data processing will be conducted in GDPR-compliant, controlled environments with encryption, access controls, audit logs, and, where feasible, anonymisation or pseudonymisation before analysis.
For highly sensitive datasets, federated learning will be used so raw data remains within national or sectoral boundaries.
AI development will follow “trust-by-design” principles: risk assessment, human oversight, bias monitoring, traceability, model versioning, and documentation aligned with the EU AI Act.
No autonomous, harmful, or military AI applications are foreseen.
